I Still Have a Dream

At this point in the speech, Dr. King was supposed to stop talking. The prepared draft that he was reading from had a conclusion here when he told his audience to go back home and work for change but instead of reading the conclusion Dr King went off script, perhaps because a young African-American gospel singer named Mahalia Jackson shouted to him at this moment from the sidelines, “Tell them about the dream, Martin.” So he went off script and he started talking about his dream for America’s future, putting together fragments he had mentions in previous speeches, and that decision is what led to this speech becoming one of the most famous and beloved speeches in American history.
